One part of CNY Jazz's mission is to teach young musicians to understand the art form of jazz, to play in combos, to improvise, and, if they choose that career path, to become professional musicians.
To this end, we have developed the following scholastic programs:
SummerJazz Workshop is a four-day student improv program-in-residence at the Arts and Home Center at the NY StateFairgrounds. It features a combo-based daily curriculum of small ensemble coaching, student jams, master classes, professional performances, and a residency by a nationally known artist-educator who performs with the students in a grand finale evening performance. The students also perform a day-long youth jazz festival at the New York State Fair each August.
Scholastic Jazz Jam is a series of events in which local high school and college students perform in a supportive environment backed by professionals.
CNY Jazz Management is an arts-in-education program created to serve school districts, colleges, and theaters across Upstate New York. It is dedicated to the educational mission of the CNY Jazz. Our goal is to develop a knowledge of jazz and its diverse family of styles by developing, sustaining, and offering world-class in-school performances specially designed to support all academic disciplines. All programs are offered in cooperation with BOCES Regional Arts-in-Education Service.
