CNY Jazz StudentsSummer Jazz Workshop 2012

The Basics

  • June 25 to June 28, 2012
  • This year's guest clinician is internationally renowned saxophonist and distinguished teacher Chris Vadala, best known for his work with the Chuck Mangione Quartet.
  • Save $100 on each additional family member (18 and under) if registered by May 22, 2012.
  • Download 2012 registration forms here.

The Summer Jazz Workshop is an intensive four-day experience culminating in public performance with international guest artists.

Our process-oriented curriculum is designed to balance combo, one-on-one coaching, master class, and public performance environments in a supportive atmosphere, guided by the finest regional and national musician-educators.

In a nurturing and user-friendly manner, our students are led through highly educational and inspirational activities in a convenient day-school environment, culminating in a grand concert.

Summer Jazz WorkshopIn 2012 we will again present our “Big Band Lab” in which students develop skills in large ensemble sight-reading and phrasing.

  • All students 18 and under are eligible.
  • We accept promising, motivated students at all levels of expertise. Those accepted will be placed in a combo with others of comparable experience at improvising.
  • No auditions are necessary for admission to the program. Simply fill out the registration forms and mail to the CNYJAF with your deposit. On the first day of the program, short placement auditions will be held in order to place students in the ensemble most appropriate to their skill level.
  • Students who play any instrument, not only those traditionally associated with the jazz ensemble, may attend.
  • Students should bring a self-prepared piece with CD accompaniment, and/or be prepared to sight-read and improvise to CD accompaniment provided.
  • Additional performance opportunities are offered at the New York State Fair and the NE Jazz and Wine Festival.

Our program is located in the Art and Home Center at the NYS Fairgrounds. The school day is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a Grand Concert on Thursday evening. No transportation is provided by the program.

Tuition for the entire workshop and evening performance with our national guest artist-clinician is $340. A $170 minimum  tuition deposit is due with each registration with the balance ($170) due by May 22, 2012. All tuition is non-refundable. A lunch meal plan is available for an additional charge and must be pre-paid no later than June 18, 2012.
