Saxophone phenom Chico Freeman returns to Jazz Central

Syracuse NY – Jazz Appreciation Month just got a lot jazzier in Central New York. The touring performance schedule continues at Jazz Cenral with a return engagement by Chico Freeman and his quartet, performing at 7:30 pm on Saturday April 8th.  The saxophonist, composer, and producer is a veteran of the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Charles Mingus, Wynton Marsalis, and countless others and is recognized as one of the most important jazz musicians of our time. He is back in the states after more than a decade working in Europe. Advance sale tickets are on sale now at www.cnyjazz.org/cny-jazz-store/ for $20.00.

This date marks Freeman’s second appearance in Syracuse and the first since his 2019 debut appearance here before the pandemic. Freeman will lead a new group consisting of the Brubeck Brothers’ Chuck Lamb, Peter Mack on bass, and drummer Harvey Sorgen, veteran of groups ranging from Hot Tuna to Paul Simon to Santana to Ahmad Jamal.

Freeman is the product of an influential Chicago musical dynasty led by his father, legendary saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master Von Freeman, and uncles, guitarist George Freeman and drummer Bruz Freeman. A master of many styles ranging from R&B to blues, hard bop to avant-garde, Chico made his bones with Memphis Slim and Lucky Carmichael, then pop and R & B greats The Temptations, Michael Jackson, The Four Tops, Jackie Wilson, The Dells, The Isley Brothers, and The Eurythmics. He has performed with such jazz greats as Elvin Jones, Sun Ra, and Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Hank Jones, Freddie Cole, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Roy Haynes, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Sting, plus Latin greats Tito Puente, Machito, Irakere, Arturo Sandoval, Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, and many others.

“Chico’s depth of talent and experience is among the heaviest on the planet ,” according to Larry Luttinger, founder of CNY Jazz and presenter of the event, which is underwritten by Mack Studios. “If you’re serious about witnessing jazz history in action, this should be a bucket list event for you. I know it’s an overused term, but this one is a must-see. Thanks so much to Peter Mack for making this happen for CNY Jazz.”

Only 75 tickets will be sold to this exclusive performance.
