Following the sellout success of last year’s event, CNY Jazz brings Jackiem Joyner back for a return engagement in a double bill with the soulful singer-songwriter Selina Albright to celebrate Black History Month.  The gala will be held at Drumlins and hosted by Pascale’s.  Groundbreaking local broadcaster Jackie Robinson will be present to receive this year’s “Pioneer Public Service” award.  The event is again sponsored by Vicki Brackens Financial Solutions Network, with additional support from Visions Federal Credit Union, Wegman’s, National Grid, Dunk & Bright, and Syracuse University’s Humanities Center.

Joyner is one of the most distinguished musical alumni that Syracuse’s urban neighborhoods have created.  A Fowler High School grad, Jackiem is a two-time ACT-SO winner who finished his education as an emancipated student, taken in by his band director, the late Lou Adams, who showed the young Jackiem the ropes of public performance in his local dance band.

Joyner has previously appeared in Syracuse as headliner of the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival, and has officially received the keys to the city at a Jazz in the City concert appearance.  Selina Albright is a seasoned world traveler who has sung or recorded with artists including George Duke, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, Hugh Masakela and Pieces of a Dream, as well as with her father, legendary saxophonist Gerald Albright.  A legacy who grew up surrounded by the biggest names in the music industry, she has become a star in her own right.  She has been appearing at selected engagements with Joyner for over a year.

While in Syracuse, Jackiem will also be speaking to Syracuse University students about his triumph over adversity, his path to success, and his new career activity as a science fiction novelist.  He is now the author of his debut novel, Zarya, (Big Treble Media), centered on a teen heroine who saves the world despite formidable odds.  His academic appearance is sponsored by the S.U. Humanities Center, with additional underwriting from the Dean of Arts & Sciences, English, Religion, Arts & Sciences Writing, and Art & Music Histories departments.

“Jackiem wants to give back so much to youth, and to his home town,” according to Larry Luttinger, organizer of the CNY Jazz event.  “I’m extremely thankful for the long and distinguished list of corporate and academic supporters of his residency here.  We always leverage our artists’ presence in Syracuse to create learning enrichment opportunities for local student.  Jackiem always answers the call.  There’s no one who pays it forward like him.”

Veteran local news anchor and talk show host Jackie Robinson will receive the 2017 “Pioneer Public Servant” award at the event.  At WSTM, Jackie broke ground as Syracuse’s first female African-American anchor.  Presenting the award will be Melanie Littlejohn, the Regional Executive Director of National Grid for Central New York.

New sponsor Dunk & Bright Furniture, annual host and sponsor of the opening Jazz in the City concert at its South Salina Street location, is donating two loveseats an coffee tables for the occasion so that two lucky couples will be able to enjoy upfront seating, complimentary drinks, a photo opportunity with the artists, and other prizes.  Seats are presently being raffled at cnyjazz.org, and tickets will be available at the event.  The winners will be announced just before the show begins.  Cash buffet and bar will be available throughout the evening.

For interviews with Mr. Joyner, call 661-480-7130.

Singing Elvis with his family’s band, the Christophers, Kevin has since shared the stage with Joe Whiting, fiddle legend Hal Casey, guitar master Tommy Emmanuel, and five-time Grammy winner Lloyd Maines. In addition to performing solo, Kevin also occasionally performs with his brother Loren.

March 18: Dave Porter
A former guitarist, vocalist and member of Syracuse heavyweights and national touring group “805,” (RCA Records: their 1982 Album “Stand in Line” topped at # 36 on the Billboard Charts), Dave still packs humor and virtuosity into his personal interpretations of the work of Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, and more.

April 1: Jess Novak Band
A powerhouse quintet with lead vocals and violin by Jess Novak, the band features Mark Nanni (of Los Blancos) on piano, organ, accordion and vocals; Byron Cage (of Tommy Castro, Joe Louis Walker) on drums; Anthony Saturno (of Sampere, Wagner 3000) on guitar; and Billy Harrison (of Black Rhino) on drums, guitar, vocals and beatboxing – they create one amazing sound!

April 22: Todd Hobin & Friends
Back for a spring encore!

May 6: Kay & the Miracle Cure

801 University Ave, Syracuse, NY 13210

4 p.m. Doors; 5 p.m. SHOWTIME

CNY Jazz launches their 21st cabaret season with a debut Central New York appearance by Alita Moses, an extraordinary new talent on the international jazz scene. Winner of the 2014 Montreux Jazz Vocal competition and protégé of the legendary Al Jarreau, she will sing from a diverse songbook ranging from Billie Holiday and George Gershwin to George Benson and Prince.

“Alita has exploded on the international scene since winning the prestigious Swiss competition while still an undergrad at the Philadelphia University of the Arts,” according to Larry Luttinger, director and founder of CNY Jazz. “She spent the summer performing a sold-out tour of twenty-nine concerts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Eastern Europe. We caught her taking a breather while she prepares her first recording in New York, and we’re delighted that she’s agreed to come upstate to perform for us. Only twenty-two, she sings like a veteran, and captures audiences with her charm. She’s destined for stardom.”

Born in West Hartford, Connecticut and now a New Yorker, Alita could be called a “Broadway Baby”, raised in a family of professional musicians. The daughter of accomplished operatic baritone and voice professor Fredric “Fritz” Moses and Broadway performer Janelle Robinson (Mary Poppins, Oklahoma), Alita grew up playing the cello, guitar and piano and sitting in on her father’s classes at the Hartt School of Music.

A President’s Award winner, she has performed with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and The Philadelphia Pops Orchestra as well as with solo artists and bands such as Larry McKenna, Matt McAndrew, ILL DOOTS, Steve Davis, Joel Frahm, Walter Fischbacher and many others. While studying at the Montreux Academy, she collaborated with Patti Austin, Lee Ritenour and Charles Lloyd.

The CNY Jazz Cabarets feature fine national talent in a club atmosphere, with cash bar and food stations available starting at 4pm. Two sets are scheduled at 5 and 6pm. Sheraton parking garage tickets will be validated at the door.
