Jazz in the City Serves Urban Neighborhoods in August
Molina Healthcare Village Expands

Syracuse NY – During the month of August, five Syracuse neighborhoods will again ring with the sounds of music provided by the Jazz in the City urban outreach concert series. Events are scheduled every Thursday evening in each quadrant of the city, with a new fifth location on the Near North Side at the Bleu Chick restaurant. Each concert will be augmented by the presence of a still-growing family of health service providers, who will dispense vital information and offer screenings. Led by Molina Healthcare for the second year, they include ACR Health, The Prevention Network, AMR, the Syracuse Community Health Center, and new sponsors Cancer Connects and Berkshire Farm Center & Services for Youth. A mix of national, regional and youth artists will perform, and local minority vendors will display their wares. The La Liga Youth Volunteer Corps will assist at all the events, giving work experience and adult responsibilities to neighborhood youth at risk.

Since the focus of Jazz in the City is in the neighborhoods of Syracuse, the City of Syracuse has been a key supporter of this urban outreach concert series. “Jazz in the City is one of the best representations of all that our city has to offer. It highlights some of our local businesses, talented musicians, and unique neighborhoods,” said Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. “Beyond the music, it also supports important outreach by connecting our community members to healthcare resources and services.”

The ongoing goals of this program are to reconnect urban residents to their culture, bring diverse groups from the suburbs and the neighborhoods together, and provide educational, social and cultural benefits to youth and residents. According to CNY Jazz Executive Director Larry Luttinger, “We’ve been putting feet on the most challenging streets in America with this program for eighteen years now, through thick and thin, and I’m extremely pleased that the series is holding its own, due to our loyal sponsors and visionary new investors. I’m ever so thankful that our County Executive Joanie Mahoney has now directed key funding to this series, making it possible to continue to serve five neighborhoods and business corridors in the city.

County Executive Joanie Mahoney said, “The success of Jazz in the City is a testament to the rich and diverse culture we have in our community. Onondaga County is proud to invest in this festival to ensure it continues for everyone to enjoy.”

“Jazz in the City is a model of civic co-operation that’s admirable,” said Larry Luttinger, organizer of the series. “Molina Healthcare of New York continues their major investment by using our cultural platform to help them bring much needed health and human service information to the poorest urban neighborhoods in the country. Assembly Member Pam Hunter provides long-term support from the state. A big shout out to Chief Frank Fowler, who provides coverage throughout the series. Syracuse couldn’t ask for more from such committed urban stakeholders as all of our sponsors, city and county government working together, and our dedicated front-line health care agencies.”

Additional returning sponsors who keep making the series possible are Dunk & Bright, Le Moyne College, Attilio’s Restaurant, new sponsor Regency Tower, Strada Mia 313, CSEA Local 1000, IBEW Local 43, and the Red Mill Inn.

“We are always excited to be a part of this year’s Jazz in the City festivities as the main sponsor of the Health Services Village,” said Rita Paniagua, community engagement manager for Molina Healthcare of New York. “Connecting the community with much needed health and human services is part of the Molina mission, and we’re happy to partner with like-minded organizations that work to strengthen and support those in need.”

Said Helen Hudson, President of the Syracuse Common Council, “Jazz in the City is a prime example of how communities can benefit by experiencing talented artists in urban venues that are comfortable, surrounded by neighbors and visitors. I urge you to attend these fine events, that demonstrate to all Syracusans that Jazz in the City is a unique vehicle for peace and unity.”

Said Luttinger of this year’s lineup, “There will be a new look and a new vibe for two of the events this year. We’re moving our traditional Attilio’s concert to their new North Side location at Lodi and James, and we’ll be spotlighting the new Bleu Chick restaurant with an event in the 300 block of North Salina Street.”

The series kicks off with an extended event at Dunk & Bright on South Salina Street, with a performance by the classic soul and Motown group known for their frequent local festival appearances, Trumptight315.

The following week, the series moves to the West side for a concert at Strada Mia 313, at the corner of Geddes Street and Park Ave. Park Avenue will be closed, and the restaurant will offer outdoor and indoor dining. Althea Rene, the first female flutist to chart at #1 on the Billboard jazz charts, brings a band led by returning guitar virtuoso JJ Sansaverino, and Ronnie Leigh will entertain in Strada Mia before and after the concert.

The next installment in the series takes place at Regency Tower, the new location of Attilio’s restaurant. Outdoor and indoor dining will again be available at Attilio’s. The nine-piece funky horn band Atlas, closing in on forty years of service entertaining audiences across upstate New York, will preside for this occasion, and Ronnie Lee will again provide bookend music inside the restaurant.

The new edition of the series is next, in the 300 block of North Salina Street, across from the new Bleu Chick restaurant, which will be serving their menu of Southern-inspired small plates. The cozy new venue is the brainchild of partners Joe Bryant, former Syracuse Parks Commissioner Baye Muhammad, and Zheadrick Barbra. The funk and soul juggernaut The BlackLites will perform, and once again Ronnie Leigh will entertain before and after the concert.

The series will conclude on the east side of Syracuse with a celebration at Le Moyne Plaza, the three million dollar investment that Le Moyne College made for the surrounding Fayette-Salt Springs neighborhood. SIRSY, the nationally touring rock and soul duo, will provide their hard-hitting sounds for community and campus alike. Games, prizes, and a silent disco will be featured at this extended finale event.

Lawn chairs are suggested for all those attending. No alcohol is served at Jazz in the City events, except in nearby restaurants. All details may be found at www.cnyjazzinthecity.org

Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival Celebrates 10 Years Downtown

Title Sponsor Berkshire Bank, New Wines from California and Italy

America’s music, fine wines, food and fun will converge this summer as CNY Jazz celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival in Clinton Square, the heart of downtown Syracuse, on July 27th and 28th.

The two-day event provides the performing arts anchor for Syracuse Artsweek, the “festival of festivals” that stretches from Clinton Square to the Everson Museum, attracting over 66,000 festivalgoers to downtown Syracuse every summer.

The lineup of artists appearing on the main stage has never been stronger, thanks to continued support from title sponsor Berkshire Bank. The main stage will feature an international lineup featuring the RnB and Soul sounds of Brownskin, Mainstream Jazz with the Peter & Will Anderson Quintet, Pop Reggae sounds from Root Shock, Canadian songstress Barbra Lica, and two Billboard #1 charting headliners: Jackiem Joyner, Syracuse’s favorite son and most famous contemporary jazz expatriate; and Marcus Anderson, the dynamic saxophonist, vocalist and entertainer who spent 9 years as a feature performer in Prince’s New Power Generation band. Joyner and Anderson will be backed by the Sam Wynn Band.

The festival’s WAER Mardi Gras and World Beat pavilions will resound with multiple sets by Ultravibe, the hard-hitting funk outfit hailing from Ithaca; The Djangoners, returning to the festival with acoustic French Swing reminiscent of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt; Madame Zz & Her Gentlemen, the soul revue knocking audiences out at the Turning Stone Resort Casino; and a group that embodies the multi-generational mission of CNY Jazz, the Joe Vanable Quintet, comprised of grads of CNY Jazz scholastic programs now making it on a national level, paired with standout regional educators Steve Brown of Ithaca College and Joe Carello, Director of the Stan Colella Parks & Recreation All-Stars.

Said Chris Papayanakos, Regional VP of Berkshire Bank, “We are proud to be the title sponsor of the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival. Our partnership in this event continues in the tradition of Berkshire Bank’s support of the Syracuse community and our appreciation of the arts as a cultural and economic engine. We look forward to enjoying this year’s acts in the company of our employees, clients and neighbors living in downtown Syracuse, Central New York, and beyond.”

Senator John A. DeFrancisco, a longtime supporter of the arts and major sponsor of this year’s event, said, “As a jazz enthusiast, I am always extremely happy to support the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival.  This collaborative event helps to highlight great national and local talent and draw thousands of residents and visitors alike to our vibrant downtown Syracuse. I look forward to this year’s outstanding lineup.”

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, added “The Jazz & Wine Festival is one of the many great events happening downtown during Artsweek that brings together a diverse group of incredibly talented, local artists. This festival in July and the Jazz in the City concert series in August have become staples of the arts scene in our community.”

A large family of corporate sponsors makes this festival possible, including new sponsors O’Brien & Gere, C&S Companies, new Party Tent sponsor WAER 88.3, new Corporate Tent sponsor Bousquet Holstein, new Act sponsors Brackens Financial Solutions Network and Jamesville Dental Office, who will underwrite Jackiem Joyner’s performance, Village Dental Group, AT&T, Modern Industrial Marketing, Baldwin, Sutphen & Frateschi PLLC, and new travel sponsor BTI. They join Lockheed Martin Employees Federated Fund, American Express, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Bond Schoeneck & King, Washington Street Partners, Unimar, Grossman St. Amour, Critical Link, Ra-Lin, Syracuse Teachers Association, Syracuse New Times, Sunny 102, Soul of Syracuse, and in-kind sponsors Charles Signs, Cabot Cheese, Eastwood Litho, and DUMAC, as well as annual funding from CNY Arts and Onondaga County.

The festival’s world class wines are provided this year by major sponsor Palm Bay International and Southern Glazers Wine & Spirits. Outstanding wines from Northern Italy are represented by The Cavit Collection and Lunetta Prosecco. Wines of Australia’s Hunter and Barossa Valley will be showcased with “The Plan” wine selections by McGuigan.

The CNY Jazz commitment to arts education and cultural literacy continues with the event’s scholastic festival and alumni jam sessions. “We’ve turned out over 1,000 SummerJazz Workshop and Parks & Rec All-Stars alumni in the last 18 years,” said Larry Luttinger, organizer of the festival. “The kids that you see on stage getting mentored by and performing with national artists are the kids who will be at our reunion jams for years afterward.  It’s a kick to be able to keep in touch with this group. The oldest are now professionals in all walks of life, and they have made America’s music their creative outlet. They’re playing their part keeping creativity alive in Central New York.” These students will be adjudicated by Jackiem Joyner in the Scholastic Festival, and mix it up with the pros in twin “Late Night Jam Sessions” at Jazz Central.

The event also provides a creative outlet for the region’s many avocational jazz bands on Saturday afternoon, with shows by the Jazz Kats, Oswego County’s own big band; Utica’s Easy Money Big Band, and the most unique large ensemble imaginable, the “Brig Juice Mini-Corps”, a twenty-two piece brass-and-drum set ensemble of members of the Syracuse Brigadiers, playing high energy arrangements including Buddy Rich’s “Channel One Suite”.

Big Band Festival Scheduled for Jazz Central

Syracuse NY – Three, count’em, three big bands are slated to appear on Monday night April 30th at downtown’s Jazz Central theater, featuring the Stan Colella Parks & Recreation All-Stars, the University of Michigan Jazz Ensemble, and the Micro Big Band.

The evening opens with a set by the Stan Colella Parks & Recreation All-Stars, the youth orchestra of CNY Jazz in partnership with the City of Syracuse. They will be mentored by clinicians from the ranks of the University of Michigan Jazz Ensemble.

Following their set, the U. Michigan big band takes the stage, under the direction of Ellen Rowe, Director of Jazz Studies and internationally known jazz pianist. Rowe is a trailblazer in jazz, the first female named as Chair of a major university jazz department in the world.

The evening concludes with a debut set by the new Micro Big Band, led by Maynard Ferguson alumnus and lead alto saxophonist Mike Dubaniewicz. The ten-piece “little big band” plays a combination of swing, groove-oriented funk, and Latin selections. The MBB also performs original compositions, in addition to the music of classic big band leaders such as Maynard Ferguson, Count Basie, and others.

“A perfect confluence of schedules combined to make this night happen,” according to Larry Luttinger, founder of CNY Jazz. “It was total serendipity. CNY Jazz Closes 22nd Season with Billboard Top 10 Singer

CNY Jazz concludes their 22nd Cabaret Series on Sunday, April 29th at the Sheraton Syracuse University with a first-ever local appearance by vocalist, pianist, songwriter, and educator Tony DeSare, who will appear with the 17-piece CNY Jazz Orchestra. The “Solvay Sound” High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform an opening set, and educator Dick Ford, founder of Signature Music, will receive the CNY Jazz Educator of the Year award. Tickets are $35 at the door or $30 in advance at cnyjazz.org/subscribe, or by calling 315-479-5299. Students will be admitted for $10.

Named a Rising Star Male Vocalist by Downbeat magazine, DeSare has won critical and popular acclaim for his concert performances throughout North America and abroad. DeSare has three top ten Billboard jazz albums to his credit and has been featured on the CBS Early Show, NPR, A Prairie Home Companion, and the Today Show. In live performance, he has played Carnegie Hall, Las Vegas showrooms, countless jazz clubs, and festivals worldwide, and leads a busy schedule performing with major symphony orchestras across the country. A frequent front man for the viral YouTube sensation Postmodern Jukebox, he is also an accomplished, award-winning composer and songwriter, a past winner of the USA Songwriting Contest and writer of the theme to the movie “My Date with Drew”.

An added element of his stay in Syracuse will be a clinic and masterclass for city vocal students given at H.W. Smith School the day after his public performance, underwritten by a grant from the Syracuse Sounds of Music Association.

“There’s only one chance every year to experience a top flight big band cabaret show like this in Syracuse, and this is it,” according to Larry Luttinger, organizer of the event. “Why go to Vegas, when it’s right here in your backyard? This event also underscores the CNY Jazz commitment to education in all we do, with the Solvay Ensemble performing, and our tribute to a game-changing urban stakeholder, music educator Dick Ford. I’m extremely thankful to the folks at SSMA who awarded us the grant to be able to keep Tony here and spread some excitement and educational value to city youth.”

The CNY Jazz Cabarets feature international talent in a club atmosphere, with cash bar and affordable food stations available starting at 4pm. Two sets are scheduled, at 5 and 6pm. Sheraton parking garage tickets will be validated, and holders of CNY Jazz Club Discount Cards will receive 10% off food and drink.

Two Chances to Jam with CNY Jazz

The coming weekend will offer plenty of chances for aspiring jazz musicians to be coached by professionals and perform in public, with two opportunities offered by CNY Jazz Central.

The first, for singers, is the Nancy Kelly Vocal Jazz Jam and Stars of Tomorrow Cabaret, held at Jazz Central and hosted by Kelly, Syracuse’s most famous female jazz vocalist and dedicated educator. Saturday from 2 to 5 pm, she will individually coach vocalists of all ages and abilities in a friendly, supportive master-class setting, with piano accompaniment provided. Then on Sunday evening at 7 pm, all the singers return for a public cabaret performance, backed by the CNY Jazz Trio, with Nancy closing the show with a feature song and a scatting, vocalese blues jam with all participants.

To sign up, email info@cnyjazz.org or call 315-479-5299 to reserve a space. Enrollment is limited, on a first come, first served basis. The fee for vocalists is $30 for the weekend, and both events are open to the public for $10 admission, under eighteen $5.

For budding instrumentalists, the last Scholastic Jazz Jam of the season will be held Saturday from 2 to 5 pm at Le Moyne Plaza. Improvisers in all styles and on any instrument may sit in and play tunes of their choice with the CNY Jazz Quartet, a group of musician-educators from the CNY Jazz Orchestra, and will receive real-time coaching on the bandstand. These sessions are free and open to the public, sponsored by Le Moyne College. No advance registration is necessary.

More information on both programs can be found at www.cnyjazz.org at the “ALL EVENTS” tab.

Fulton Day of Scholastic Jazz Features CNY Jazz Orchestra

Syracuse NY – The third consecutive “Fulton Day of Jazz” will take place Thursday March 15th at G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton, New York, concluding at 7:30 pm with a free public concert featuring the CNY Jazz Orchestra. It is hosted by Terry Caviness, director of bands at G. Ray Bodley High School, and sponsored by Fulton Savings Bank.

This year marks an expansion of the festival, with the addition of the Phoenix High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Liza Grethel. The CNY Jazz day residency includes multiple clinics, rehearsals, and a “learn to improvise” scholastic jazz jam session, all given by members of the CNYJO. In the finale concert, soloists Joe Carello and Bret Zvacek will perform with Fulton’s High School Jazz Ensemble and the Phoenix jazz band, respectively. Then the prize-winning Central New York Jazz Orchestra, the regional all-star big band now in its 22nd season, will take the stage for a full-length closing set led by Zvacek.

“We’re ever so thankful to our friends at Fulton Savings for their loyal support of this event, which is still growing,” according to Larry Luttinger of CNY Jazz. “Oswego County doesn’t yet have an invitational scholastic jazz festival, and we’re proud to work with them to build this experience. The unique skill set involved in learning to improvise builds leadership, cooperation, theoretical skill, and self-confidence in these young people. It’s wonderful to give them the “aha” moments that help them realize their abilities – and what it takes to pursue this discipline.”

What: Fulton Day of Jazz
When: Thursday March 15th, 7:30 pm concert
Where: G. Ray Bodley High School, 6 William Gillard Dr, Fulton, NY

CNY JAZZ PRESENTS 10TH ANNIVERSARY BLACK HISTORY MONTH CABARET

Syracuse NY – On Sunday February 25th, the CNY Jazz Black History Month Cabaret is moving to the posh surroundings of the Marriott Syracuse Downtown’s Finger Lakes Ballroom to celebrate its 10th Anniversary of sponsorship by Brackens Financial Solutions Network. West Coast contemporary saxophonist Eric Darius will headline a double bill including guest vocalist Tracy Hamlin in a two-hour show. At intermission, Assemblymember Pam Hunter will be honored with the Pioneer Public Service Award, for groundbreaking public service. A combo of members of the Stan Colella Parks & Recreation All-Stars will entertain in the Cavalier Room.

Additional supporters include National Grid, Wegmans, Visions Federal Credit Union, and the Syracuse University Humanities Center. New sponsors and long-time CNY Jazz supporters Bill and Nancy Byrne have graciously underwritten a full buffet for the event, offered at no extra cost to all attendees.

Additional events will extend the cultural impact and reach of the gala concert. Following the cabaret, singer, producer, and record label owner Tracy Hamlin will speak about her career, music as a unifying cultural force, and technology as a tool to draw from a diverse music history. Sponsored by the Syracuse University Humanities Center and a wide network of academic departments, this free symposium will take place Monday February 26th at noon in Bird Library’s Peter Graham Scholarly Commons. Monday evening, Hamlin will coach a free 7:00 p.m. voice master class at the Community Folk Art Center, 805 E. Genesee St, which is sponsoring the class. All elements of song delivery will be covered, and an accompanist will be provided if needed. All interested vocalists must register at cfac@syr.edu or by calling 315-442-2230.

“When CNY Jazz brings an artist to Syracuse, our policy is to capitalize on that presence to make their stay more than the sum of its parts,” according to Larry Luttinger, organizer of the cabaret series. “Jazz is the centerpiece of America’s culture, with great unifying power. Our incredible collection of sponsors deserves copious thanks for their important contributions to this celebration of the diversity of our culture, especially Vicki Brackens, without whose help this event would not have grown to the signature February event that it’s become.”

The CNY Jazz Cabarets always feature fine national talent in a club atmosphere, with cash bar and food available. Paid garage parking is available in the garage directly to the southeast of the hotel. Patrons are cautioned that the former Hotel Syracuse garage no longer connects to the hotel via the overhead walkway.
