Jimmy Van Heusen cabaret honors legendary Syracusan
Dinner cabaret features family memorabilia
SYRACUSE NY – Edward Chester Babcock, aka Jimmy Van Heusen, is without a doubt Syracuse’s most famous and legendary cultural export. This Nottingham High School grad penned more tunes for Frank Sinatra than any other, garnered four Oscars and ten Oscar nominations, wrote the songs for all the legendary “Road” movies starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, and served his county well during wartime as a flight instructor for WW II military pilots.
CNY Jazz will celebrate Jimmy’s hometown legacy on Sunday April 27th at the Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles with a cabaret performance highlighting his most popular songs, sung by standout vocalists Cherie Giraud and Scott Dennis with the Dan Pugh Trio.
The organizers have the blessings of the Babcock family, which is donating a never-before-seen photo display to CNY Jazz for the event. Said Larry Luttinger of CNY Jazz, “We thank Brook Babcock, Jimmy’s grandnephew, who’s always been totally invested in keeping Jimmy’s legacy alive for his hometown. There are still Babcocks living in Skaneateles, making it the perfect setting for this celebration. The Sherwood is offering a full menu for this event, Cheri and Scott will perform a 90-minute narrated show, and everyone can have their photos taken at the Van Heusen photo display holding an Oscar. I can’t imagine a more entertaining fine dining musical experience showcasing our very own legendary songwriter. Jimmy’s up there with the Cole Porters, Jerome Kerns, Harold Arlens, and Hoagy Carmichaels of the world. There should be a statue of Jimmy somewhere in Central New York. Until that happens, your best shot at learning about his impact in equally historic surroundings will be at the Sherwood.”
Seating will be limited to 100 at this event, which will occupy the main dining area of the Sherwood Inn. Arrival at 4 p.m.is strongly suggested, to allow time for seating and ordering by showtime.
