Jazz at the Cavalier presents 3rd Season in Marriott Downtown

The 3rd season of downtown Syracuse’s over-the-hump-day jazz series will feature some new twists, designed by CNY Jazz and the Marriott Syracuse Downtown. The hours are shifting to 6:00 to 9:00 pm, with food and drink service available at 5:30. The hotel will be raffling off New Year’s Eve packages, a completely new jazz-themed signature cocktail menu will be rolled out, and an enhanced talent lineup will feature one-of-a-kind collaborations and celebrity sit-ins.

The debut installment is scheduled for Wednesday October 2nd, with Nancy Kelly and her accompanist Rick Montalbano, augmented by celebrity sit-in Jeff Stockham on trumpet. The series continues weekly, with a short holiday break, until May 13th, 2020. There is no cover or minimum.

“We’re mixing it up more this season, adding to the overall gumbo to give the gigs a party atmosphere, and a touch of the unexpected,” said Larry Luttinger, CNY Jazz director and series curator. “That kind of spontaneity is what jazz is all about. You’ll see new faces, established talent, new combinations of players, and more folks dropping in to sing or play for a tune or two, or a whole set. A new look, a new sound around that grand piano, and new tastes in food and drink – we’re keeping it fresh.”

Touring artists descend on Jazz Central

Syracuse NY – The fall menu of CNY Jazz 2019-2020 season offerings will feature some hot specials, thanks to a host of international touring artists scheduled to appear at Jazz Central, downtown Syracuse’s busiest little theater, 441 East Washington Street.

First up is the legendary Chico Freeman: saxophonist, composer, producer and veteran of the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Charles Mingus, Wynton Marsalis, and countless others. Back in the states after more than a decade working in Europe, he will perform at 7:30 pm on Saturday September 14th, with an international band.

A week later, Brooklynite Ryan Keberle brings Catharsis, his unique quintet, to town for a 7:30 pm show on Saturday September 21st. Keberle has been named #1 Rising Star trombonist in the Downbeat International Critics Poll, and his group has appeared in jazz festivals worldwide.

October brings three distinct and stylistically wide ranging jazz shows, beginning with a return appearance on Saturday October 12th by noted New York bebop guitarist Joshua Breakstone, touring with his trio in support of his new release “Children of Art,” a tribute to the seminal drummer and bandleader Art Blakey, on the 100th anniversary of Blakey’s birth. Breakstone, a fixture on the international guitar scene since the 1960’s, is celebrating his 40th year as a recording artist.

Close on Joshua’s heels is Chicago bassist and leader Joe Policastro, appearing with his trio on Monday October 14th, bringing a refreshing new take on songs by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Talking Heads, Santo & Johnny, Leonard Bernstein, and others. A regular in clubs and festivals nationwide, Policastro’s “alt-jazz” approach creates a musical hybrid with wide appeal to all audiences.

The last tour stop of the fall occurs Thursday October 24th, when Casey Crosby gives a solo piano concert on Jazz Central’s Steinway. A Californian educated at Syracuse University and now living in Zurich Switzerland, Casey has been concertizing across Europe for decades. A Global Music Award winner, he will bring New Age, Rural Folk, Blues, Gospel and classical styles to bear in his concert, during a rare trip back to the states.

“Our intimate little space is becoming known around the world as an artist-friendly, fully equipped room for concertizing and recording,” according to Larry Luttinger, founder of CNY Jazz. “We’re thankful that old friends and new faces are dropping in to bless us with rare musical occasions, putting us on their maps, as it were. We’re giving the area hugely eclectic musical experiences that no one else can, in a unique chamber theater setting. There’s something here for everyone. Jazz On Tap series expands in Skaneateles

Syracuse NY – The 24th year of CNY Jazz programming kicks into gear with the fifth season of “Jazz On Tap”, the Sunday afternoon jazz series presented by CNY Jazz in the Finger Lakes On Tap brewpub and restaurant in Skaneateles. Events will take place on select Sundays from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, including a special Saturday night kickoff party with Ronnie Leigh on September 7th from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, and a now traditional New Year’s Day party with Angelo Candela’s combo, for those unable to party the night before or who need a second dose of fun. The series is expanding from 20 to 29 events, and this season’s lineup features past regulars and new faces. All events are free, with no cover charge. “CNY Jazz Club” cardholders will receive 10% of food and drink.

“We’ve put together a fresh new group of artists this season, the best in the extended region,” according to Larry Luttinger, curator of the series. “Mark Nanni and The Intention were a hit last year, so we’re bringing them back for multiple dates. Other new faces are Mike Cortese’s new Latin Jazz combo ‘Montuno Blue’, Jeff Stockham doing his tribute to Chet Baker, and powerhouse singer Nancy Kelly, along with long-time series favorites from past years. We’re also bringing former Syracusan Jon Leroy in from Albany with his trio.” Other acts include Rochester’s Jon Seiger, the acoustic swing of Stringdom, Auburn favorites Cookie Coogan and Bob Piorun, the E.S.P. Quartet, Edgar Pagan’s GPL, Ithaca’s Sally Ramirez, Ronnie Leigh, and guitarist Steve Brown, who is paired this year with Elmira organist Dino Losito.

Concert Series Energizes Syracuse’s Urban Neighborhoods

Syracuse NY – Syracuse’s neighborhoods will again benefit from the positive cultural, social, and economic outcomes of Jazz in the City, the mobile cultural platform that has served the city since 2002. Four concert events are scheduled on Thursday evenings in August. National and regional groups will perform, minority vendors will showcase their wares, and the Molina Healthcare Village will distribute information from a host of area health and family service organizations. Tops Friendly Markets will give out coupons. Unions, colleges, and the Syracuse Police will be on hand to recruit, and the La Liga Youth Corps will provide ground services for the four-concert series. All events are free and open to the public.

The series will present one concert in each quadrant of the city, starting on the Old South Side at the Dunk & Bright lot on South Salina Street on August 1st. As is traditional for the series, the Blacklites will perform with a special guest. This year they will feature Rhonda Plunkett, the dynamic Southern Tier soul vocalist, making a rare trip upstate. The KC Cuse Line Dancers will perform a pre-show demonstration. Food and beverages will be available from Sarita Foods.

On August 8th, new sponsor Circare will host the West Side concert at a new location for the series, Leavenworth Park. Syracuse’s favorite smooth jazz son Jackiem Joyner, Fowler High School grad and Billboard #1 saxophonist, will hold court. Food trucks will be present including Limp Lizard, Baked Potato Express and Skippy’s Ice Cream.

After a week’s hiatus, the series moves to the Hawley Green neighborhood on August 22nd. Atlas, the eight-piece funk and pop juggernaut now celebrating their thirty eighth year in show business, returns by popular demand for an outdoor dining concert at the Regency Tower, hosted by Attilio’s. The KC Cuse Line Dance Seniors will perform a pre-show demonstration. Food and beverages will be available at Attilio’s.

The series concludes with a four-hour event at Le Moyne Plaza in the Salt Springs-Fayette area, serving city and campus with two hours of games and a silent disco, followed by a concert by West End Blend, the eight-piece funk and soul outfit from Hartford Connecticut fronted by vocalist Erica T. Bryan. Food and beverages will be available.

“We’ve never had a more robust series as we’ve been able to produce this year, despite a challenging fundraising environment,” said Larry Luttinger, director of CNY Jazz. “Without a team of folks who understand the value and outcomes of activities like this, we would never be able to do what we do. CNY Jazz creates unique youth training orchestra

Syracuse NY – CNY Jazz Central has created a unique pre-professional performing ensemble, the CNY Jazz Youth Orchestra, which will perform an inaugural season of five summer concerts throughout the month of July in various locations in Onondaga County. Selected by audition, orchestra members hail from the City of Syracuse Schools, various county school districts, and Onondaga Community College. Their founding Music Director and conductor is Joe Carello, well-known to regional audiences as the former director of the Stan Colella Parks and Recreation All-Stars, saxophone soloist with the CNY Jazz Orchestra, the Syracuse Symphony and Symphoria, college woodwind instructor, and director of the Le Moyne College and O.C.C. jazz ensembles.

The ensemble is unique nationally as a pre-professional apprenticeship program for developing young artists entering the professional job market. Support from the Musicians Performance Trust Fund of the American Federation of Musicians, the Onondaga County Youth Bureau, Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 267, and UAW Region 9 makes it possible for the orchestra to receive prevailing wages for performing five free “Public Service” concerts as youth members of the AFM.

The 17-piece big band, with a featured vocalist, is the ultimate element of the CNY Jazz “Educational Pipeline System.” CNY Jazz identifies young talent by going into schools to present concerts, residencies, and clinics, offers scholarships to the their “SummerJazz Workshop” in residence at the NY State Fair, plus free admission to their Scholastic Jazz Jams, Arts-in-Education shows, residencies, and vocal jazz programs, and selects the cream of the crop to audition for their elite ensembles. As young artists enter the college and professional markets, they supply veteran musicians and the Jazz Central Theater to help them produce their college application performance videos, write letters of recommendation, and counsel families about the best college programs for their children. Its overarching goal is to instill discipline, team building, and leadership skills applicable to life success in young people, regardless of their choice of career.

“This new youth jazz orchestra is unique in that it recognizes the arts as a profession, with an apprenticeship program as a springboard to success,” according to Larry Luttinger, founder of CNY Jazz. “We will always emphasize urban youth at risk and make them a recruiting priority, as we’ve always done with all our programs. But this will be an elite group, open by audition to any young artist under the age of 21 living in Onondaga County. It will instill the professional values of the AFM in these emerging musicians from a young age, values that will last a lifetime.”

CNY Jazz has a strong history of producing positive outcomes and creating success stories for area youth. They provided artistic direction, instruments, music library, and  other support for the predecessor of the youth orchestra, the Parks and Rec All-stars, which produced dozens of national luminaries in music and other professions, including Joe Magnarelli (Harry Connick and Lionel Hampton), Jackiem Joyner (Billboard #1 saxophonist), Bill Billingham (Chicago Lyric Opera),  Tom Brigandi (Chuck Mangione), Wayne Tucker (Taylor Swift, Ne-yo), two Syracuse City Schools band directors and a principal, professors at all three local colleges, and even Terry McAuliffe, former Governor of Virginia.

Charter members of the new orchestra are Seaver Schultz, Marko Suchy, Adam Ball, Richie Leonardo, and Nathan Cattell, saxophones; Nick Tarrats, Tim Frye, and Alex Williams, trumpets; Miles Owens, Wyatt Weldum, Dante Carioti, ad Dan Shaw, trombones; Mike Passarelli, Jr, piano; DeVaughn Jackson, bass; and Marcus Oliver, drums; with Ally Rexine as featured vocalist.

The orchestra will perform five free concerts in the month of July, in high profile settings across the county.

Jazz fest alive and well in Syracuse

CNY Jazz celebrates 18 years of serving Syracuse with a top-flight international jazz festival surrounded by fine wines, food, and fun, as the Berkshire Bank Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival holds court in Clinton Square, the heart of downtown Syracuse, on July 26^th and 27^th.

The two-day event provides the performing arts anchor for Syracuse Artsweek, the “festival of festivals” that stretches from Clinton Square to the Everson Museum, attracting over 66,000 festivalgoers to downtown Syracuse every summer.

This year, the 11^th as a “jazz and wine” fest and the 18^th as Syracuse’s downtown jazz festival, brings many new facets. It is the first in partnership with the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, which will lodge festival artists and host local acts on its outdoor patio. A new presenting partnership with Mack Studios will bring an international flavor and a member of America’s foremost jazz dynasty to the main stage. The event will also serve as the festival launching pad for the brand new CNY Jazz Youth Orchestra, an all-star 17-piece big band whose members hail from city and county school districts and area colleges.

The festival has been serving downtown Syracuse and Central New York with a signature jazz  event for nearly 20 years with no signs of slowing down, according to organizer and founder of CNY Jazz, Larry Luttinger. “Syracuse doesn’t have to worry about losing any jazz capacity while we’re on watch,” according to Luttinger. “As the sole surviving jazz festival for the region, we’ve had a year to lay the groundwork for growth. We’re continuing to work hard to convince the public and private sector that this tradition needs to continue and that Artsweek continues to grow. Jazz, and the arts as a whole, are a huge, largely untapped economic driver for our region. I’m carrying this flag full-time these days, and lobbying hard for new investment in downtown arts organizations, with a signature downtown jazz event leading the way as the prime cultural tourism engine.”

This year’s lineup of artists has never been stronger, thanks to continued support from title sponsor Berkshire Bank, Assemblymember Pam Hunter, a host of new sponsors, and new co-presenter Mack Studios. Peter Mack, well-known regional producer, bandleader, and musician, will curate two main stage acts. Delfeayo Marsalis, trombonist member of the American dynasty setting the benchmark for mainstream jazz, will appear with the Macktet, an all-Upstate New York group with members from all corners of the state.  Lending an international flair is Quinteto De Corazon, featuring Milo and Omar Tamez from Monterrey Mexico, German-born Thomas Heberer, Mack, and Harvey Sorgen, a veteran of wildly eclectic experience including Hot Tuna, Paul Simon, Phil Lesh and Dave Douglas.

The remainder of the bill features a wide variety of musical styles played by the best in the business. “Jazz is like America, in all its various cultural forms,” said Luttinger. “As an education organization, we always deliberately present a sampler of all that jazz is, and can be, for listeners of all ages, tastes, and backgrounds.” Other main stage acts include a French-inspired acoustic swing act with bluesy overtones, the Pelotones; the powerhouse contemporary jazz, funk and RnB electric flute of Detroit’s Althea Rene; the smooth jazz of JJ Sansaverino and Will Donato, and the unique horn-driven Millennial group the Huntertones, complete with Sousaphone and human beatbox.

In between main stage acts, the festival’s WAER Mardi Gras and World Beat pavilions will resound with multiple sets by area mainstay soul group the Longwood Jazz Project, former Soulive saxophonist Sam Kininger with Mike Houston’s 5^th Edition, New York City’s emerging guitar sensation Joe Wittman with his trio, and a lively CNY Jazz Alumni Jam hosted by standout young trumpeter and leader Nick Di Maria, now at the Manhattan School of Music. Each night of the festival ends with a blowout late night jam session at Jazz Central, a short walk from Clinton Square, where the pros mix it up until the wee hours.

Warming up the jazz vibe on the “Grill & Chill” deck as part of the Marriott Syracuse Downtown’s Artsweek activities are vocalists Melody Rose and Scott Dennis, regulars in the CNY Jazz at the Cavalier Series, performing happy hour sets on Thursday and Friday. They will play in an “open classroom” setting with a main stage artist as featured soloist and clinician. Andrew Carroll celebrates debut album with concert at Jazz Central

Syracuse NY – In celebration of the national release of his debut album, pianist Andrew Carroll will present a jazz trio concert with special guests on Friday May 24th, at 8 p.m. in the Jazz Central theater. Admission is $20 and includes an album CD or download card.

Titled “Alliterations,” Carroll’s maiden effort has been featured in Jazz Times magazine and other highly acclaimed publications. Joining Carroll’s trio will be Greg Evans on drums and Danny Ziemann on bass.  Other surprise special guests will perform.

“Although he is an acclaimed musician now, both locally and on the New York City scene, we can’t forget that he is one of our most distinguished talents, a product of many of our training programs,” said Larry Luttinger, Executive Director of CNY Jazz. “And, not only is he a former piano student of Rick Montalbano and the great Shelly Berg, but he is a great jazz composer and arranger. It will be a treat hearing him, along with another CNY Jazz alumnus-made-good Greg Evans, now teaching at Ithaca College. We’re rolling the red carpet out for Andrew and urge the musical community to come support his new national release.”

Carroll has already amassed a long list of credits to date that belies his youth. He has shared stages with many of the greats in the music industry, including Burt Bacharach, Steve Miller, for whom he has performed and arranged, Jane Monheit, Elliot Mason, and Peter Eldridge. He has appeared on the David Letterman Show with the GRAMMY Jazz Ensemble. He has received the 2005 Downbeat Student Music Award for Instrumental Soloist, the Outstanding Piano Soloist Award from the Essentially Ellington Competition, two IAJE Outstanding Musician Awards and Scholarships, and an Honorable Mention and Merit Award in Jazz Keyboard from the ARTs Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS), a program of NFAA. He is a Thornton School of Music Burt Bacharach Scholar.

Joe Magnarelli and Akiko Tsuruga to perform at Jazz Central

World-renowned trumpeter and native Syracusan Joe Magnarelli will visit Syracuse to perform at Jazz Central, downtown’s jazz arts and education center, on Sunday May 19th at 5:00 pm. His group will include his new bride Akiko Tsuruga, Japanese-born Hammond B-3 organist. Advance sale admission is $15.00 at www.cnyjazz.org. Students with valid I.D. will be admitted for $5.00.

“Joe is undoubtedly the most successful Syracusan out there making huge waves on the international jazz scene,” according to Larry Luttinger, CNY Jazz Executive Director and host of the event, “This will also be the first time that Akiko, another international sensation, will perform in Syracuse. Let’s all turn out to welcome Joe back after a long hiatus, and to welcome his new life partner Akiko as well. These two are the new power couple of the jazz world.”

Magnarelli is no stranger to Central New York audiences, having performed at multiple summer festivals here, including the Northeast Jazz & Wine festival with the Syracuse Symphony. He has nine records out as leader, and leads a busy life collaborating with countless other jazz luminaries. He has toured with Lionel Hampton, Harry Connick Jr, Rosemary Clooney, Jane Monheit, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, among many others. He is also an adjunct professor of music at the Juilliard School and Rutgers University.

Akiko Tsuruga hails from Osaka, Japan, and has been a mainstay on the New York jazz scene since 2001. She counts among her mentors Grady Tate and Dr. Lonnie Smith, who urged her to move to the United States to pursue her art. She currently splits her time between her own projects, dual-leader dates with husband Joe, and touring with the legendary saxophonist Lou Donaldson. A regular and crowd favorite at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in Jazz at Lincoln Center, Akiko has headlined many well-known jazz venues, such as Blue Note, Birdland, Smoke, Green Mill in Chicago, and Yoshi’s in Oakland, CA.

CNY Jazz Closes 23rd Season with Dynamic Vocal Duo

CNY Jazz concludes their 23nd subscription season on Sunday April 28th at the Sheraton Syracuse University with a return engagement by vocalist, trombonist, bandleader, and educator Ron Wilkins, who will be paired with Syracuse’s treasure Ronnie Leigh in an evening of jazz vocal gymnastics. Nancy Kelly, internationally acclaimed singer, will receive the CNY Jazz Educator of the Year award. An icon on the NYC jazz scene, Ron Wilkins’ uncanny musicianship has led him to perform with the world’s greatest artists – Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Rosemary Clooney, Lena Horne, Jerry Lewis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Jimmy Heath among them, and groups such as The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra,
Arturo O’ Farrill and his Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, the Count Basie Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony and Festival Orchestra, Austin Symphony and Austin Pops, Victoria Symphony, Temple Symphony. He and Ronnie Leigh, well-known to local audiences and former member of the Drifters, Atlas and Prime Time Funk, will be backed by an all-star local quartet.

The world-traveled, veteran jazz vocalist and dedicated teacher (and hostess of the Vocal Jazz Jam
and Stars of Tomorrow Cabaret Series) Nancy Kelly, will be honored during the event as the 2019 CNY Jazz Educator of the Year. Nancy studied voice at the Eastman School of Music. Since then she has performed from Singapore to Switzerland, France, and Turkey, Japan and Asia including Hong Kong, Bangkok and Jakarta. Nancy appears regularly in New York City including performances at The Blue Note, Birdland and The Rainbow Room and Dizzy’s Jazz Club at Lincoln Center. A dedicated educator, she maintains a studio of dozens of aspiring vocalists. “It’s been 15 years since Nancy and I started her Jazz Jams and Cabarets here at Jazz Central,” said Larry Luttinger. “In that span she’s coached and showcased almost two hundred jazz and pop vocalists. Nancy pays it forward big time, and it’s about time she was honored for all that she does to bring along the next generation. There is no more dedicated teacher of the jazz voice than Nancy.”

The CNY Jazz Cabarets feature international talent in a club atmosphere, with cash bar and affordable food stations available starting at 4 pm. Two sets are scheduled, at 5 and 6 pm. Sheraton parking garage tickets will be validated, and holders of CNY Jazz Club Discount Cards will receive 10% off food and drink.

Salt City Center for the Performing Arts presents Valentines Cabaret

Syracuse NY – Salt City Center for the Performing Arts again presents the crème de la crème of performers in ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: A CABARET. Hosted by CNY Jazz Central the show explores the many facets of relationships in a “one night only” Valentines Cabaret on Saturday, February 16th at 8:00pm. The evening’s festivities will include fan favorites – the “roulette wheel” singalong and Musical MadLibs. Under the music direction of Barry Blumenthal, the cabaret will include the musical talents of CNY favorites Bob Brown, Cathleen O’Brien Brown, and Ceara Windhausen, with special guest, NYC’s Richard Koons, returning to the area fresh off the First National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s LOVE NEVER DIES where he appeared as the villainous Squelch.

Koons is no stranger to Syracuse audiences having performed multiple times over the years with Salt City Center for the Performing Arts and Bob Brown’s Opening Night Productions in several cabarets, including the smash hit LEADING MEN DON’T DANCE. Koons is a graduate of The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (MM in Vocal Performance) and has appeared in many major regional houses and national and international tours.
