CNY Jazz Cabaret Features Prince Alum Marcus Anderson
Sam Roberts to Receive Pioneer Public Service Award

Syracuse NY – On Sunday February 24th, the CNY Jazz Black History Month Cabaret will enliven the posh surroundings of the Marriott Syracuse Downtown’s Finger Lakes Ballroom.. Saxophonist and vocalist Marcus Anderson, a veteran of Prince’s New Power Generation Band, will perform. At intermission, Commissioner of the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Sam Roberts will be honored with the 2019 Pioneer Public Service Award for groundbreaking public service. A CNY Jazz youth combo will entertain in the Cavalier Room prior to the show. $35 advance sale tickets are now available at www.cnyjazz.org.

Brackens Financial Solutions Network sponsors the event for the 11th year, with additional support from National Grid, Wegmans, Visions Federal Credit Union, Pathfinder Bank, United Auto Workers, the Syracuse University Humanities Center, and the Community Folk Art Center. CNY Jazz supporters Bill and Nancy Byrne have again graciously underwritten a full buffet for the event, offered at no extra cost to all attendees.

Additional events will extend the cultural impact and reach of the gala concert. On Monday February 25th, Marcus Anderson will provide educational services for area students. Sponsored by the Syracuse University Humanities Center, a wide network of academic departments, and the Community Folk Arts Center, his day will start with a free symposium at noon in Bird Library’s Peter Graham Scholarly Commons, where he will perform solo and speak about his path to success, his years with Prince, and his new product line, ANDcoffee. Monday evening, he will coach a free 7:00 pm music master class at the Community Folk Art Center, 805 E Genesee St, for young musicians, who are encouraged to bring their instruments or observe. Attendees must register at cfac@syr.edu or by calling 315-442-2230.

Marcus Anderson last performed in Syracuse as headliner of the 2018 Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival. “Marcus brings a massive arsenal of talent to bear when he takes the stage, and has a lot to pay forward to the next generation. When CNY Jazz brings an artist to Syracuse, our policy is to capitalize on that presence to make their stay more than the sum of its parts,” according to Larry Luttinger, organizer of the cabaret series. “Jazz is the centerpiece of America’s culture, with great unifying power. Our incredible collection of sponsors deserves copious thanks for their important contributions to this celebration of the diversity of our culture, especially Vicki Brackens, without whose help this event would not have grown to be the signature February event that it’s become.”

The CNY Jazz Cabarets always feature fine national talent in a club atmosphere, with cash bar and food available. Paid garage parking is available in the garage directly to the southeast of the hotel. Patrons are cautioned that the former Hotel Syracuse garage no longer connects to the hotel via the overhead walkway.

S.U. Donates Men’s Basketball Tickets

Syracuse NY – CNY Jazz Central’s annual winter jazz festival fundraiser, The Seneca Savings January JAZZfest, will again be held at Mohegan Manor, Baldwinsville’s historic, multi-story event center, on Sunday January 27th from 1:00 to 9:00 pm. This year’s national guest artist is Dave Brubeck’s long-time saxophonist, Bobby Militello. Continuous music on all floors of the venue will showcase a multiplicity of styles – from bebop, cabaret, funk, and soul to acoustic swing. A pair of S.U. Men’s Basketball tickets will be raffled as the grand prize in an event-long auction. Advance tickets are available for $25 at www.cnyjazz.org. Admission at the door is $30, $15 with valid student I.D.

Headliner Bobby Militello is renowned internationally as the saxophonist in the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet from 1982 until Brubeck’s death in 2012. He is also known for his tenure with Maynard Ferguson’s big band from 1975 to 1979, his stint with Doc Severinson in the Tonight Show band, and many other collaborations, recordings, TV, and film appearances. Other acts performing throughout the day include Miller & The Other Sinners, whose sound encompasses funk, soul, and Memphis Blues, led by David Michael Miller; the acoustic swing of Stringdom, with guests Joe Davoli and Frank Grosso; the cabaret vocals of Melody Rose, hailing from Brooklyn; pianist Andrew Carrol; The Lawless Jazz Collective, a quintet comprised of star grads from CNY Jazz training programs, in a celebrity jam; and an event-closing professional jam session that runs until 9:00 pm. Mohegan Manor’s fine food and drink will be available at all times throughout the 8-hour festival. A complete hour-by-hour performance schedule is available at http://www.cnyjazz.org/january-jazzfest.

New sponsor Three Chord Bourbon, founded by Neil Giraldo, legendary guitarist with Pat Benatar, Kenny Loggins, John Waite, and others, will conduct tastings of their small batch whiskeys in the afternoon. Three Chord is also sponsoring the appearance by national artist David Michael Miller. A large family of corporate sponsors makes the event possible, led by Seneca Savings and Mohegan Manor, including S.U. Sports, Ricelli Trucking, OneGroup, Hearth Cabinets And More, Burritt Motors, Scott Northrup State Farm Agency, J.R. Clancy, new sponsor Emerald Equipment Systems, Onondaga Beverage, and the Red Mill Inn.

Raffle items will also be available, including the centerpiece prizes of two tickets to the S.U. vs Louisville Men’s Basketball game in the Dome, and a guitar autographed by Neil Giraldo. “We call this event our annual ‘fun-raiser’, because you’d never know it was a charity event,” according to Larry Luttinger, founder of CNY Jazz and creator of the event, now in its ninth year. “We couldn’t make this happen without the loyalty of Seneca Savings, Mohegan Manor, and all of our other fine sponsors. I am continually humbled by the support we get from the area’s finest musicians as well, who make this shindig a sampler of America’s music from soup to nuts. There’s a room with a style of music catering to every taste at this festival.”

TWO NEW MUSIC SERIES BLOSSOM AT SUGAR MAGNOLIA

Syracuse NY – Armory Square’s newest and coziest destination for traditional southern and southern inspired cuisine will become Syracuse’s newest cultural destination, thanks to two new weekly series designed and presented in partnership with CNY Jazz. A groundbreaking series called “Page to Stage” will present come-one come-all spoken word, slam poetry, poetry reading, and storytelling events on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. “Jazz at the Magnolia” will present an eclectic lineup of live jazz, soul, and Americana on Thursdays from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  As a “CNY Jazz Club” venue, 10% food and drink discounts will be available to CNY Jazz cardholders at all these events. There are no cover charges.

Both series will debut for the venue’s grand opening week starting September 19th. The Wednesday spoken word accompanist is Dan Pugh, and Edgar Pagan’s GPL Lite will kick off the Thursday lineup.

The creative strategy behind this effort belongs to Katherine Lowe, proprietor, executive chef, and former arts administrator with the Cultural Resources Council (now CNY Arts) and Larry Luttinger, founder and Executive Director of CNY Jazz Central. “Katherine came to me with an incredibly strong concept melding her cuisine and drink menu with her diverse artistic interests,” according to Luttinger. “We’ve been acquainted since her days as an arts administrator for our arts council, back when it was called the Cultural Resources Council. The results of what we cooked up will be evident to patrons. There’s no way to describe it other than fun, hip, cozy and cool to the extreme. If you live the creative life, you have to check this out.” The Thursday night talent roster trends toward the funky, fashionable, and unconventional, with acts including Joanna Jewett, Deyquan and Yajha Bowens, Maria DeAngelis, Kanjira, Jeff Stockham, Jessy Chick, Melissa Gardiner, and others.
