FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jazz Central opens season with Chelsea Opera
Menotti’s The Medium first Fall offering
Syracuse, NY – The CNY Jazz “Live at Jazz Central” season opens with Chelsea Opera’s production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s psychological thriller The Medium, October 22nd at 8 p.m. and October 24th at 2 p.m. at the Jazz Central theater on 441 East Washington Street in downtown Syracuse. The opera will be presented in English with a run time of 90 minutes, including one intermission. All patrons will need to show proof of vaccination or PCR test within 72 hours of entry, and must remain masked during the performance. Advance sale $35.00 general admission tickets may be purchased by visiting www.chelseaopera.org or by visiting the www.cnyjazz.org web site. This production is part of an expansion of fully staged productions to upstate NY by the Manhattan-based opera company, now in its 18th season.
The Medium tells the story of Madam Flora, whose phony seances come back to haunt her. Monica, her daughter, and Toby, a mute adopted by Madam Flora, reluctantly aid her in fleecing desperate clients as their own love story unfolds. A captivating blend of mysticism and madness, Menotti’s score and plot is a perfect seasonal offering, particularly for patrons who might be new to opera. An original staging by Chelsea Opera Producing Artistic Director Garrett August Heater promises an evening of eerie twists and turns. Music direction is by John Krause. Leonarda Priore, Chelsea Opera President and Co-Founder, serves as producer.
The cast includes Ann McMahon Quintero as Madam Flora, Sarah Daniels as Monica, Maxwel Anderson as Toby, Amanda Dunlop as Mrs. Nolan, Nora B. Strong as Mrs. Gobineau, Adam Fine as Mr. Gobineau, and Lingyin Cao as A Voice. The production staff includes lighting designer Andy Hughes, costume designer Susan Berger, stage manager Josh Gadek, and production intern Chelsea Colton. Poster design is by Cayetano Valenzuela, with graphic design and grant writing by Klay Enos.
“Scrappy and ambitious, with a taste for recent and lesser-heard music, Chelsea Opera should be commended” – The New York Times
