Jazz Central presents 20th century jazz expatriate in rare appearance
Syracuse NY – Over a year and a half after the COVID shutdown forced the cancelation of a Jazz Central appearance by saxophone icon Ricky Ford, CNY Jazz has announced his rescheduled show, coming up November 5th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at www.cnyjazz.org for $20 presale, $25 at the door, and $10 with student I.D.
The concert is a part of Ford’s first American tour since the pandemic shutdown. A European resident since settling in Lyon, France in the 1990s, he now lives in Paris and has made Syracuse a stop on his latest quasi-annual swing through the states. After replacing Paul Gonsalves in the Duke Ellington Orchestra at the invitation of Mercer Ellington, he went on to work with historic jazz figures including Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, Yusef Lateef, Sonny Stitt, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, and many others on both sides of the Atlantic. He will appear here with his quartet, featuring John Kordalewski on piano, Jerome Harris on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums, all veterans with stylistically diverse credits ranging from Chick Corea to Julius Hemphill.
“We’ll be getting a look at the flow of modern jazz history when Ricky makes his appearance here,” said Larry Luttinger, CNY Jazz leader and host of the concert. “The overused term ‘rare opportunity’ applies here, when trying to describe this special concert for Syracuse. I don’t know how else to describe it. This will be an important occasion for the Syracuse jazz community.”
Audiences must show proof of vaccination or recent testing, and masks must be worn in Jazz Central unless eating or drinking.
